Wie withdraws from Safeway

Citing more wrist problems, Michelle Wie has withdrawn from next week's Safeway International event in Phoenix.

At Waggle Room, Courtgolf points out the inconsistencies of Wie's health reports in recent weeks. My two cents - if this chain of events isn't just a series of "pathetic" excuses, wouldn't it be time to admit that maybe Michelle's wrist problems are chronic?

I'm an unapologetic Michelle Wie fan. I think her parents, and by extension, her managers, promoters, and every other type of hanger-on, have pushed, pulled and prodded her to the point that she no longer enjoys the game. Now she's looking for any excuse she can find to avoid competitive golf.

It's too bad she got talked into turning professional. It's too bad Nike and Sony felt the need to throw that much money at her.

Maybe soon she'll feel empowered enough to tell everyone to get out of her face, then finish her studies and go do something socially redeeming with her degree -- and play a little competitive golf once in awhile.

I actually think she's showing good judgment here. Assuming she isn't a pathological liar or a traumatized teen but just someone trying to get ready for LPGA competition, it's easy to imagine a scenario where she sprains her wrist practicing out of heavy rough. Given how inaccurate she's likely to be with the driver early this season at least, getting familiar with the high grass is a top priority.

That said, check out the Yokomine-Shin showdown today. The top JLPGA player and the top KLPGA player--both of whom I expect to see on the LPGA next year--are -6 with 6 to play.

They traded doubles down the stretch, but it was Yokomine's on the final hole that gave Shin new life--and she took advantage in the playoff! Win #2 for a Seoul Sister, both at Yokomine's expense. At least she's #1 on the JLPGA money list....

I think we all forget that this girl is still a teen and still growing. My youngest son had to give up football in University because of weak ankles. I just hope that Ms.Wie doesn't have to resort to retiring from competitive golf at an early age.
