Paula Creamer fired a 65 to open up a five-shot lead at the Mitchell Tournament of Champions. Jin Joo Hong is in second place at -7 with Annika Sorenstam and Pat Hurst tied for third at -6.
Creamer birdied seven times with no bogeys to continue her blistering pace from Thursday’s back nine. Paula has played her last 25 holes in -14. Hong managed eight birdies on the day but three bogeys (two on par-5s) cost her some ground. Hurst holed out for eagle from 115 yards on the final hole to move into the tie for third. First-round co-leader Meg Mallon posted 82 – 15 more strokes than she took Thursday – to fall to +5 and T29 (out of 35 players). Lorena Ochoa carded a 69 to move into the Top 10 while Suzann Pettersen’s 71 leaves her alone in sixth but eight shots behind Creamer. The two-stroke penalty Suzann took at 13 for accidentally moving her ball and then not replacing it before playing turned a good round into a so-so one. Didn’t Pettersen make that same mistake at least once already this year?
