Meg Mallon and Paula Creamer share the lead after Round One of the Mitchell Tournament of Champions. Mi Hyun Kim, Seon Hwa Lee, Pat Hurst, Suzann Pettersen and Natalie Gulbis are tied for third two shots behind.
Creamer birdied her last seven holes to rebound from +2 to -5. Mallon also made hay on the back nine, coming home in 32. This is the first time Meg has led or co-led after a round since her last victory in 2004. Pettersen holed out for eagle from 94 yards at the par-4 9th (too bad TGC didn’t have a camera there – they had 6, 7 and 8 covered so I don't understand the omission). Here are the other notable scores:
70 Se Ri Pak, Jin Joo Hong
71 Annika Sorenstam, Hee-Won Han
72 Joo Mi Kim, Karen Stupples
73 Catriona Matthew
74 Lorena Ochoa, Juli Inkster
75 Sherri Steinhauer, Jennifer Rosales, Heather Daly-Donofrio
76 Nicole Castrale
77 Christina Kim
82 Morgan Pressel
Play was delayed for an hour by frost – even Mobile, Alabama gets cold every once in awhile. By the afternoon, temps were in the 60s with very little wind.
Defending champ Ochoa opened with a 73 here last year, so I wouldn’t count her out just yet. You may count out Pressel if you wish. As you see, Jennifer Rosales avoided the DNS this week and will now attempt to dodge the WD. Heather D2 is not helping her chances for a repeat of 2004.
