Honda LPGA Thailand – Final Round

Suzann Pettersen lost all of her seven-shot lead over the first 17 holes but eagled the final one to win the Honda LPGA Thailand by one stroke over Laura Davies. Paula Creamer finished third, three shots back at -18 while Rachel Hetherington was fourth at -16.

Pettersen went out in 37 to give Davies and Creamer opportunity to close in. At the turn, Laura was only two back with Paula four behind. Creamer eagled 10 to get within two but was unable to sustain her charge. Playing in the final group, Davies exchanged birdies with Pettersen – Laura at 10 and Suzann at 11 – to keep the margin at two. A Davies birdie at 14 cut the lead to one, but Pettersen stretched it out again with one of her own at 15. At the par-3 16th (which by my reckoning had to be the toughest on the course this week) Laura nearly ended her chances when her 10-footer to save par missed. But Suzann failed to slam the door when her six-footer for par missed as well.

17 brought the two-shot swing that Davies was looking for. Pettersen missed a three-footer for par while Davies dropped a five-foot birdie to tie for the lead, completing the seven-shot comeback. At the par-5 18th, both long hitters reached the green in two. Laura’s 25-footer didn’t fall and she tapped in for birdie to take a one-shot lead. Suzann had 15 feet to win and she drained it to claim her fifth LPGA victory of the year and her third win in four starts.

Laura Davies registered her third top three finish of the year as she once again was denied the next-to-last point she needs to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame. Paula Creamer posted her third consecutive 66. Annika Sorenstam carded her third straight round in the 60s to finish in sixth place. Alena Sharp collected her top finish of 2007 - seventh place – and her second Top 10 of the year. Hee-Won Han finished tied for eleventh in her first event back from maternity leave. The Big Surprise goes to amateur Mika Miyasato, who finished T15 at -6. The Big Disappointment goes to Se Ri Pak, who wound up T44 at +6.

what happened to rosales?

Lpga.com reports an unsigned scorecard is the reason for Jennifer's DQ.

That's been a typical Rosales story since she stopped being one of the best players on the tour a few years back. You've done some posts on who gets their card in 2008--what's Rosales's status?

She won the SBS at Turtle Bay early in 2005, so she's exempt through 2008. Jennifer has had some injury problems, but hasn't ever claimed a medical extension. She was able to start 16 events in '06 and 15 so far this year, so my guess is she's healthy now but just playing badly.

Hopefully the need to keep her card will get Rosales a bit more dedicated to her game in '08. My take over the last 2 years has been that if she's not playing up to her old standards, she seems to lose interest and then get disgusted enough to WD or get herself DQed. For awhile, it preserved a relatively high Rolex ranking, but not for long.
