Corning Classic Preview

The Tour returns to one of its longest-running events this week, the LPGA Corning Classic. Hee-Won Han won last year’s tournament, but she won’t be defending her title since she is still out on maternity leave. Han defeated Meena Lee in a four-hole playoff for the first of her two 2006 victories. The tournament begins Thursday and The Golf Channel will provide tape-delayed coverage beginning at 6:30pm EDT Thursday.

Corning Country Club has one of the shortest layouts the ladies will play all year. At 6132 yards, the par-72 course’s main obstacle are the trees alongside the fairways. A year ago, the course played a little on the easy side as the cut was even par. Larry Smich says the course is “the absolute easiest there is”.

No Lorena Ochoa this week, so for the first time in seven weeks I am forced to pick someone else to win. The pickings are relatively slim, as a LOT of top players decided to skip Corning.
Check out the field for yourself – no Webb, Inkster, Pressel, Prammanasudh, Kerr, either. I do have two clear cut favorites to choose from, so I will take Paula Creamer to win and relegate Ai Miyazato to CYA status. My other CYA will be Young Kim.

Statistics: Winners 1-10, Top Tens 14-30.
