Charlotta Sorenstam is the surprising first round leader at the Corning Classic. She tied her record career low with a 64 to lead Beth Bader by one shot. Shi Hyun Ahn, Paula Creamer and Jamie Hullett are two back after opening with 66s.
The scoring was low-low-low…35 players in the 60s, 71 under par, only one round above 79. Here are a few examples:
Hye Jung Choi 67
Ai Miyazato 68
Seon Hwa Lee 68
Grace Park 68
Mi Hyun Kim 68
Jeong Jang 68
Young Kim 68
Meg Mallon 68
Laura Davies 69
Natalie Gulbis 69
Meena Lee 70
Kate Golden 70
Angela Park 71
Christina Kim 71
Kyeong Bae 71
Stephanie Louden 73
Pat Hurst 75
Young Jo 79
Sorenstam The Younger hasn’t been in this rarified air for quite a while. Her only career victory came back in 2000 and she’s only had four Top 10s since that season. Most of her time lately has been spent getting Annika’s academy in Orlando launched. She mentioned during her post-round interview that it was nice seeing her name on the leaderboard but she wished they would put a “C.” in front of the name so everyone would know it was her!
I haven’t seen the first round coverage yet – I was returning home from a business trip – so if I have anything to add, I’ll include it in the second round post.
