Corona Championship - 2nd Round

Maybe she does like playing in front of the home folks – Lorena Ochoa tore through the Tres Marias Golf Club in 64 strokes to take a three-shot lead at the Corona Morelia Championship. Sun Young Yoo is alone in second place at -8 after a 67, and Kelli Kuehne is third at -7.

Lorena played the front nine in -6 30, with an eagle 2 on the par-4 7th. After birdies on 10, 11 and 14, she bogeyed 15 and then birdied 18 to post 34 on the back. Paula Creamer had the second-lowest round of the day as she recovered from her first-round 76 by shooting 66. She’s currently T9 at -4.

As I pointed out the other day Mhairi McKay and Nadina Light were not entered in this event, so by default they missed out on making the Money List Top 90. With the Top 70 plus ties making the cut at +5, only about 30 players had to go home – McKay and Light would have had an easier time making some money here than at most tournaments. As for those who did enter, Yu Ping Lin and Ji Yeon Lee missed the cut to eliminate themselves from the Top 90. #96 Michelle Ellis is currently T9, while #93 Johanna Head and #101 Teresa Lu are both T27. They should help their standing considerably if they can maintain their play two more days, but their cause is being made tougher by the fact that #88 Beth Bader, #89 Jackie Gallagher-Smith and #90 Alena Sharp all made the cut. Making matters worse for the Outsiders, Sharp is currently T15 – pushing the bar even higher.

Still two rounds to go, but it doesn’t look too good for the Outsiders (or for that matter, #87 Janice Moodie).
