Brandie Burton’s opening round of 68 has her in front by one shot after the first round of the Corona Morelia Championship. Morgan Pressel and Kelli Kuehne are tied for second, with 14 others another stroke or two further back.
The somewhat softened course layout and lift-clean-place rules didn’t entirely overcome the high winds, as only 25 of the 104 starters broke par. There were six eagles made (including Burton’s hole-out at the par-4 1st hole), which is a rather high number for one day. The winds are supposed to calm down but a 40% chance of thunderstorms over the next three days could delay things. The Caddy Corner reports that his round yesterday took nearly six hours (yikes!) so any delay could create problems.
Notable scores from Thursday include:
Julieta Granada 70 -3
Lorena Ochoa 71 -2
Mi Hyun Kim 71
Carin Koch 73 E
Brittany Lang 74 +1
Christina Kim 74 +1
Grace Park 75 +2
Paula Creamer 76 +3
Natalie Gulbis 77 DQ
Gulbis was DQ’d when she failed to sign her scorecard. Whether she did that on purpose or not would be speculation, but she did sign Carin Koch’s card as a witness and was seen signing autographs after the round (this info from Yahoo via Seoulsisters.com). Oh well…
