Safeway Classic – Epilogue

Cristie Kerr’s 11th career victory garnered her 12th Hall of Fame point. Back at the end of April, I considered Kerr to be the most likely player to gain entrance into the Hall but now believe Paula Creamer to have assumed that position. I mentioned earlier that Cristie has now won in five consecutive seasons (dating back to 2004) and has won at least one event in six of the last seven years.

Helen Alfredsson is the real deal. A win at Evian, runner-up at the U.S. Open and now another second. She’s sixth on the money list, for heaven’s sake. They can give her Comeback Player of the Year right now, as far as I’m concerned.

How about Katherine Hull? Maybe
my comparisons with Cavalleri, Friberg and Lindley were a bit premature…

Since blowing the Ginn Tribute with that Sunday 79, Sophie Gustafson had missed three cuts and finished no better than T24 in seven starts. She nearly accomplished the difficult feat of missing last week’s Canadian Open cut and winning the very next week.

This week’s Big Surprise is rookie Eunjung Yi, who finished T11. Yi’s previous best was T25 at the Sybase Classic. The Big Disappointment (by a landslide) is Yani Tseng. Her missed cut was the first she’s had all year.

I expected the scoring at Safeway to be good and it was better than any of the last three years – 72.32. The playoff-qualifying score of -13 was comparable to most recent winning scores but the difference was the cut coming at even par (+4 last year).

At the end of Saturday’s broadcast, Judy Rankin mentioned three players who are hanging it up after this season. Sherri Turner and Dawn Coe-Jones I had already heard about, but Nancy Scranton was news to me. Scranton became a regular on Tour in 1985 and won three times, lastly in 2000. 1991 was her best season as she won the duMaurier Classic, finished 16th on the money list and came in
#19 in my retro rankings. Late in 2004 she gave birth to twins and has spent the last four seasons toting husband Mike Williams and the kids to nearly 90 events, earning a few Top 10s along the way. Good luck in your remaining events and also in your future endeavors, Nancy!
