Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic – 1st Round

Paula Creamer shot a 60 and leads by five shots at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. Eun-Hee Ji and Gloria Park are tied for second place after firing 65s. Eva Dahllof and Young Kim posted 66 and are tied for fourth.

Creamer’s round just missed matching Annika Sorenstam’s 59 in 2001 and tied Meg Mallon, Jung Yeon Lee and Anna Acker-Macosko for the second-best raw score for 18 holes in LPGA history. Paula was only -2 through seven holes but birdied nine times in the remaining eleven. Her score over the last nine (1-9 on the course) was 27, tying Jimin Kang (2005 ShopRite) and In-Kyung Kim (2007 Farr) for the lowest nine holes in history.

Play was suspended for lightning (or “lightening”, as lpga.com put it) about 6:30pm with 21 players still on the course. Notable scores so far:

67 Moira Dunn, H.J. Choi, Diana D’Alessio
68 Se Ri Pak, Momoko Ueda, Catriona Matthew, Wendy Ward
69 Mi Hyun Kim, Stacy Prammanasudh, Angela Stanford
69 Sun Young Yoo, Meena Lee, Soo-Yun Kang
70 Karen Stupples, Sophie Gustafson, Karrie Webb
70 Nicole Castrale, Stacy Lewis, Michelle Wie
71 Laura Diaz, In-Kyung Kim, Hee Young Park
72 Christina Kim, Grace Park, Michelle McGann
73 Amy Yang, Sophie Giquel, Liz Janangelo
74 Natalie Gulbis, Laura Davies, Kristy McPherson
75 Sandra Gal, Erica Blasberg, Ashli Bunch

The Farr has a history of low scoring. I already mentioned In-Kyung Kim’s nine-hole barrage last year, and Se Ri Pak set the LPGA record of 61 here in 1998. Annika tied that record a year later at the Sara Lee Classic and Karrie Webb matched it at the 2000 Oldsmobile Classic before Annika beat it by two shots at the 2001 Standard Register Ping.

As of 7:30pm play hasn’t resumed so I’ll assume that they will finish in the morning.

UPDATE: In a comments thread on Waggle Room, Bill Jempty (the Florida Masochist) pointed out that Jung Yeon Lee is now known as Sarah Lee. I agree with Bill that having not changed their official records page to reflect her name change is ridiculous on the LPGA's part.

Do you know why Nancy Lopez did not start?

It's a shame ESPN didn't televise the first round. Paula's round would have been fun to watch.

Caddy Larry says that Nancy "took ill".

My thoughts exactly, Diane.
