NW Arkansas Championship – Update

Play was suspended due to rain at 11:00am CDT and then was called off for the rest of the day just before 1pm. A few groups were still on the course trying to complete Round One when play was stopped. If Mother Nature cooperates, they will finish up their rounds Sunday morning at 7:15 while other groups start Round Two.

Amateur Stacy Lewis completed her round this morning and it was a doozy – a bogey-free 65 to take a one-shot lead over Teresa Lu, Kristy McPherson and Katherine Hull (who all completed their rounds yesterday). Tied for fifth at -5 are Juli Inkster, Sherri Turner and Jin Young Pak (through 14 holes). For more scores,
check the leaderboard here. Prior to this morning’s action Jeong Jang withdrew, making TC’s case for a Hound Dog jinx a little stronger.

According to LPGA official Doug Brecht, a revised schedule of the event will be determined this afternoon. Options include extending play through Monday and even shortening the event to 36 holes. Brecht was certain that playing into Tuesday was not an option. With the amount of rain in the forecast, I wouldn’t be surprised if both available options might have to be used. Also, look for any Solheim Cup participants who aren’t in contention after tomorrow to go the WD route.

LPGA.com says it's been shortened to an 18-hole event. I think that's ridiculous. Any other week but a pre-Solheim Cup week they would have gone 36 at least.

Brecht said yesterday that they would NOT play Tuesday and I believe that is purely because of Solheim considerations.

I don't know how they are going to treat this Arkansas event (or non-event, depending on how you look at it) as far as money winnings and other stats. But letting Solheim influence the decision on playing this tournament is dead wrong.
