Laura Davies and Lorena Ochoa each posted their second straight rounds of 66 (-12 overall) to lead at the Ginn #1. Natalie Gulbis is three shots back after also firing a 66, while defending champion Mi Hyun Kim is in fourth place five strokes behind. Suzann Pettersen and Se Ri Pak aren’t letting their poor Nabisco finishes get them down – they are both tied for fifth at -5.
Davies recorded her second and third eagles of the tournament Friday at holes 3 and 17. She’s eagled number 3 each of the first two days! Ochoa recovered from a double-bogey due to a penalty at that same hole number 3 to birdie seven of her last twelve holes and the last three in a row to tie Davies for the lead. Gulbis birdied six times with no bogeys. Kim carded a 69 despite three bogeys.
The cut was +2 and claimed Morgan Pressel, Julieta Granada and Sophie Gustafson. Nancy Lopez won’t take away fond memories of this week – her round of 80 put her dead last at +19.
Laura Davies needs only two more points to qualify for the LPGA Hall Of Fame. A win this week would leave her just one point shy. Considering how few events on average Laura has played here over the years (she often passes up American events to play in LET tournaments), the fact that she is knocking on the HOF door is pretty amazing. My rooting interests will be a bit splintered if this tournament comes down to Davies, Ochoa and Gulbis duking it out Sunday afternoon.
