Safeway International preview

Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club, near Phoenix, Arizona, is the site of this week’s tournament – the Safeway International Presented by Coca-Cola. Juli Inkster won last year’s event by two strokes over Sarah Lee. The Safeway gets under way Thursday and all four rounds will be televised by The Golf Channel. This is our first 72-hole event after starting the year with three 54-hole affairs.

The course is par-72, 6629 yards. That’s a little shorter than Bosque Real in Mexico but is still one of the longer layouts on tour. The Caddy Corner reports that the fairways are tight and firm and the greens are “as hard as my bathroom tile”. With the first major of 2007 looming one week away, the field is the strongest we’ve seen yet as everyone wants to tune up for the Kraft Nabisco. 19 of my Top 20 (only Michelle Wie is out) and 29 of the top 30 players in my final 2006 point standings are in the field.

Nobody is playing better than Stacy Prammanasudh, so for the first time I’m going to pick her to win this week. Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb are my CYA picks. Stats: Winners 0-3, Top Tens 5-9.
