Stacy Prammanasudh birdied 18 to close out her round of 67 to lead the MasterCard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta by one shot over Laura Davies and Marcy Hart. About an hour after the Friday television coverage ended, play was suspended due to inclement weather. The first round will resume Saturday morning at 7:30am CST, and round two is scheduled to begin at 9am.
Scoring conditions were good, but the course bared its teeth for those who strayed away from the fairway. Here are some of the scores (incomplete rounds are indicated by parentheses and the number of holes completed):
Hee-Won Han -4 (13)
Christina Kim -4 (11)
Mi Hyun Kim -3
Natalie Gulbis -3
Annika Sorenstam -3
Lorena Ochoa -1
Jeong Jang E
Meena Lee E (10)
Cristie Kerr +1
Seon Hwa Lee +1 (10)
Grace Park +3
Paula Creamer +3
Julieta Granada +8
A fine season-opening round for Annika Sorenstam, who we were so often reminded today is STILL the world’s number one ranked player. It was as if the visit to the reigning Player Of The Year’s homeland compelled Grant Boone to ram that statement through my eardrums at every opportunity. Yes Grant, I concede that Rolex still has her ranked ahead of Ochoa. They also have Ai Miyazato ranked sixth and Shiho Oyama ninth, ahead of Se Ri Pak, Pat Hurst, Mi Hyun Kim and Hee-Won Han. Annika can still be somebody’s #1, no problem with that, but the rest of that list is absolute rubbish.
Laura Davies plays about twenty LPGA events a year these days, and her appearances at the top of the leaderboard are getting increasingly rare. Last year’s only Top 10 was a second-place finish at the Evian Masters. Not too many players can post a double-bogey and still come home with a 68 like Laura did today. Maybe she can take another step towards a place in the Hall Of Fame this weekend.
