Shi Hyun Ahn opened with a 68 to take the first round lead at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Lorena Ochoa is one stroke behind, while Karrie Webb, Maria Hjorth, Jee Young Lee and Catriona Matthew are two back.
Only nine players managed to finish the day under par on the tough Mission Hills Dinah Shore course. The wind was occasionally a factor, but the main obstacle seemed to be the extremely thick rough. It seemed like everyone kept chipping up short out of that stuff. God help them all if it gets really windy! Other first round scores include:
Sherri Steinhauer 71
Pat Hurst 71
Hee-Won Han 72
Se Ri Pak 72
Paula Creamer 73
Julieta Granada 74
Jeong Jang 74
Mi Hyun Kim 74
Grace Park 74
Morgan Pressel 74
Annika Sorenstam 75
Cristie Kerr 75
Juli Inkster 75
Stacy Prammanasudh 76
Ai Miyazato 76
Natalie Gulbis 77
Seon Hwa Lee 78
There were a couple of humorous moments during the first round coverage. When Karrie Webb’s third shot to 18 spun back towards the hole but stopped about a foot away, she threw her wedge to the ground in mock disgust (that she couldn’t replicate her amazing eagle from last year). She had me laughing out loud on that one! Earlier, during a discussion on the tradition of the winner jumping into the pond, Donna Andrews mentioned her mistake of wearing a white shirt that Sunday in 1994 when she won the KNC and took the plunge. I wonder if that video clip can be found on YouTube…
