Fields Open Preview

The LPGA Tour completes its two-week visit to Hawaii with the Fields Open. The site is the Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei, just west of Honolulu. Meena Lee won last year’s inaugural event in a playoff over Seon Hwa Lee. The 54-hole tournament starts Thursday (with the final round on Saturday), and all three rounds will be televised live by The Golf Channel.

Ko Olina is par 72, 6519 yards in length. The course played pretty easy last year, as the cut came at even par and only seven players completed the three rounds over par. Like the course at Turtle Bay, I assume that the primary obstacle here is wind and if the trees aren’t moving, the scores will be low. Thursday appears to be the windiest day – 15-20 mph – while Friday and Saturday are expected to see winds of around 10 mph.

The field at Fields is virtually the same as the one last week. Still no Annika or Michelle, but a star-studded group nonetheless. Aside from not winning, Karrie Webb did nothing at Turtle Bay to deter me from picking her again to win this week. I’ll go with Lorena Ochoa and Paula Creamer as my CYA picks.

2007 Stats: Winners 0-1, Top 10s 2-3.
