Rachel Hetherington fired a 65 to start off the Mizuno Classic with a three-stroke lead. Brittany Lang, Julieta Granada, and JLPGA regulars Mitsuko Kawasaki and Rui Kitada are tied for second at -4 while 14 others are tied at -3. Five time defending champ Annika Sorenstam is six shots back after opening with a 71.
Hetherington only bogeyed one hole in route to her best round of 2006. The highlight of her day was a pitch-in from 25 yards for eagle at the par-5 13th. Other notable first-round scores:
