Maria Hjorth enters Sunday’s final round with sole possession of the lead in the State Farm Classic. Her round of 70 (-14 overall) was good enough to lead Seon-Hwa Lee and Il Mi Chung by one shot, and Cristie Kerr and Nancy Scranton by two.
Scranton had the round of the week so far, carding a 63 (one off the course record) to put herself in position to win for the first time in six years. That win came in a playoff against Maria Hjorth at the Subaru Memorial of Naples in 2000. Hjorth hasn’t won since winning twice in 1999. Lee won in June at the ShopRite, but has been scuffling in recent weeks. Chung is looking for her first career victory. Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa are lurking at -9 so they might have some input on how this one ends.
Kerr would be leading if not for the triple-bogey she took at the par-3 7th hole – her only hole over par so far this week. If she can avoid that kind of stumble today, I expect she’ll take home her third victory of the year.
