The morning groups have for the most part completed their rounds, and the two pros at the top of the board just happen to rank in the top 14 of Total Driving! As of 2:35pm EDT, those who have finished stand like this:
-6 Ji Young Oh
-4 Louise Friberg, Maria Jose Uribe
-3 Catriona Matthew, Laura Davies, Helen Alfredsson
-2 Yani Tseng, Teresa Lu, Sydnee Michaels, Rachel Hetherington
-2 Jee Young Lee, Ai Miyazato, In-Kyung Kim
Oh birdied 9 (her final hole) to claim the solo lead. Playing in the next group, Friberg bogeyed it to fall two behind. Defending champion Cristie Kerr, Mi Hyun Kim and Momoko Ueda posted -1 72. Lorena Ochoa birdied 18 (and three of her last six holes) to finish E 73, currently tied in the clubhouse with Christina Kim, Natalie Gulbis, Shi Hyun Ahn and Stacy Lewis. Poor rounds by good players include 77 by Laura Diaz, 76 by Se Ri Pak and Maria Hjorth, and 75 by Karrie Webb. Michelle Wie’s chance to contend (expected by some) evaporated quickly – two birdies, five bogeys and a 9 at the par-4 9th led to an 81.
I’ll have my usual 1st Round recap tonight after everybody has finished.
