SemGroup Championship – 1st Round

Rookie Hee Young Park posted a 69 and leads by one after 18 holes at the SemGroup Championship. Defending champion Mi Hyun Kim, Paula Creamer and Ji Young Oh are tied for second at -1 while Ai Miyazato, Leta Lindley and Vicky Hurst are tied for fifth at even par 71.

You read that right – only four players broke par on a blustery Thursday. Winds of 30mph on the already-tough Cedar Ridge track made 73 a good score. The average round was 76.78, more than three shots higher than last year’s tournament average. 45 players carded 80 or worse. Here are some of the other scores:

72 Juli Inkster, Cristie Kerr, Brittany Lang, Carin Koch
73 Lorena Ochoa, Angela Stanford, Jeong Jang, Catriona Matthew
74 Maria Hjorth, Seon Hwa Lee, Laura Davies
75 Christina Kim, Jee Young Lee, Na Yeon Choi
76 Natalie Gulbis, Laura Diaz, Moira Dunn, Sophie Giquel
77 Angela Park, Nicole Castrale, Inbee Park
78 Momoko Ueda, Karen Stupples, Erica Blasberg
79 Sherri Steinhauer, Grace Park, Sun Young Yoo
80 Morgan Pressel
81 Louise Friberg

Stacy Prammanasudh withdrew prior to the start of the round –
Golfweek is reporting she had the flu. Sarah Lee withdrew during the round but I haven’t seen why as yet. Lorena Ochoa is only four shots down in her quest to win her fifth straight event. Vicky Hurst, a 17-year-old in the event on a sponsor’s exception, won the Futures Tour event last week. Something tells me nobody has ever won an LPGA event the week after a Futures win. Vicky’s resume suggests that such a feat is certainly possible.

Friday’s winds are expected to measure between 10-20mph so this carnage will probably not be repeated. TV coverage begins on ESPN2 at 1pm EDT.

A case of bad math - I saw all those players at T97 and just messed up. 29 is correct.
