HSBC – 1st Round

Reigning Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa returned from her somewhat extended off-season without missing a beat, posting a 66 to lead the HSBC Women’s Champions. Ai Miyazato and Paula Creamer are one shot back while Jee Young Lee, Linda Wessberg and In-Kyung Kim are tied for fourth at -4.

On a day where scoring appeared to be a little on the difficult side, Ochoa went bogey-free. Miyazato and Lee both rebounded from poor results in Hawaii – perhaps this is the real start to their seasons. Other notable scores:

69 Karrie Webb, Ashleigh Simon
70 Angela Park, Pat Hurst, Sarah Lee, Morgan Pressel
70 Stacy Prammanasudh, Laura Diaz, Gloria Park
71 Annika Sorenstam, Reilley Rankin, Meaghan Francella
72 Suzann Pettersen, Shi Hyun Ahn, Natalie Gulbis
73 Angela Stanford, Christina Kim, Eun-Hee Ji
73 Jeong Jang, Ji-Yai Shin, Maria Hjorth, Seon Hwa Lee
74 Momoko Ueda, Catriona Matthew, Juli Inkster, Brittany Lincicome
75 Sherri Steinhauer, Nicole Castrale
76 Cristie Kerr, Lindsey Wright
79 Se Ri Pak, Mi Hyun Kim

Those last two names concern me. Kim had knee surgery during the off-season while Pak was recovering from shoulder problems. Rust may be the issue here, I hope so anyway. It took Sarah Lee four holes to shake her rust off – after bogeys at 3 and 4, she birdied four times the rest of the way to get in with 70.

Golf Channel’s one-hour “coverage” of Round One will air today at 3pm EST and again at 6:30pm.

The Constructivist discovered the Live Update page at the HSBC website, which at first glance reminded me of stuff I do on a regular basis. Good find there!
