Sherri Steinhauer posted a 67 to take the lead at the State Farm Classic. Ai Miyazato and Marcy Hart are one shot back with seven players tied for fourth place, two shots behind.
Playing “next-door” to her home state of Wisconsin, Steinhauer played bogey-less golf in rather windy conditions. Miyazato would have been leading if not for closing with bogeys at 17 and 18. She hit into the water at 18 but got up-and-down to save bogey, or the stumble would have been worse. Hart birdied seven times but also suffered three bogeys to wind up with her 68.
Despite the dry and windy conditions, the greens had been watered enough to hold the approaches and keep the scoring somewhat in the neighborhood of the past Rail events. 64 players scored par or better and only one stubborn Hall-of-Famer who shall remain nameless broke 80 (and got TV time to boot!). The scores include:
69 Christina Kim, Angela Park, Morgan Pressel
70 Sophie Gustafson, Mi Hyun Kim, Seon Hwa Lee, Moira Dunn
71 Annika Sorenstam, Catriona Matthew, Stacy Lewis (a)
72 Karrie Webb, Angela Stanford, Jeong Jang, Pat Hurst
74 Grace Park, Young Kim
75 Laura Davies, Shi Hyun Ahn
76 Sarah Lee
I guess Shi Hyun Ahn isn’t on as good a streak as I thought she was. Maybe Gustafson or Matthew can bail me out with a CYA win.
