Meaghan Francella’s win yesterday came one year to the day after her first professional victory. After Annika Sorenstam missed an eight-footer for birdie on the fourth playoff hole, Meaghan sank her five footer for the victory. Lpga.com has some great quotes from the first-time winner on meeting Annika, playing against her, and ultimately defeating her. http://www.lpga.com/content_1.aspx?pid=10034&mid=1
I understand why tournaments make the players replay the 18th hole for the first playoff hole. The entire gallery is already surrounding that hole, so starting the playoff there is a good idea. But to keep playing the same hole over and over until there is a winner? That’s just stupid, especially so in this circumstance. Francella was ranked 97th in driving distance coming into the event. Considering Annika’s length, playing a par-5 four consecutive times seems to be rather slanted in her favor. Extra kudos to Meaghan for overcoming that obstacle.
