ADT Championship Preview

One million dollars goes to the winner of this week’s event, the ADT Championship. The season-ending event will be held at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Annika Sorenstam is the two-time defending champion, winning by two shots last year over Michele Redman, Soo-Yun Kang and Liselotte Neumann. All four rounds will be televised – the first three by TGC and the final round by NBC.

Trump International is a par-72, 6519 yards. Water comes into play on more than half of the holes, including the signature par-3 17th. 32 players are in this year’s field playing a new elimination format. I already detailed how the players qualified and the tournament format in my “ADT Championship Qualifiers” post. Last week’s Mitchell TOC didn’t make any changes to the final positions so here are the 15 players who made the final cut:
1. Stacy Prammanasudh (135)
2. Morgan Pressel (122)
3. Jee Young Lee (113)
4. Julieta Granada (108)
5. Il Mi Chung (98)
6. Sophie Gustafson (87)
7. Angela Stanford (77)
8. Sun Young Yoo (72)
9. Maria Hjorth (71)
10. Candie Kung (70)
11. Diana D’Alessio (66)
12. Lorie Kane (64)
13. Wendy Ward (60)
WC Ai Miyazato
WC Sung Ah Yim

Since I’ve already discussed “the LPGA Playoffs” and the “championship” implications of this event, I won’t rehash it here. Despite my negative comments about this event, I believe the tournament will be an exciting one, particularly when it comes down to the final “elimination” holes on Friday and Saturday. There is a good chance that extra holes will be necessary to break ties both days, and God help the players who might have to go extra holes on Sunday to decide the winner. I feel certain that one of the Fantastic Four is going to win – the suspense will hinge on whether any of the Four gets eliminated before Sunday (insert Marvel Comics reference here). Even if all four of them make it to Sunday, that would still leave four other players with just as good a chance to win the million.

In the spirit of the ADT Championship format, I’m going to predict not only the winner but all eight finalists (with no CYAs either!). Lorena Ochoa is my pick to win this week, since she snapped my losing streak so convincingly in Mobile and she’s won the last three events she has played. The other seven players who will be playing on Sunday are Karrie Webb, Annika Sorenstam, Cristie Kerr, Juli Inkster, Paula Creamer, Jeong Jang and Brittany Lang.

Stats: Winners 2-14 (8-14 with CYAs), Top Tens 30-43.
