Karrie Webb took the lead with a birdie at 14 and rolled in another at 17 to hold off Michelle Wie and Laura Davies and win the Evian Masters.
This threesome (all playing in the final group) jockeyed back and forth all day long. Wie eagled the 9th to take the lead and through 13 still led by a shot over the other two. But her tee shot on 14 landed in a bunker, her second found another bunker beside the green, and her par putt just missed. Webb’s birdie put her in front by one with Davies also one back. All three parred 15 and 16, then at 17 Webb curled one in from about 20 feet to open up a two-shot lead. When Davies missed an eagle try and Wie failed to chip in at 18, Webb’s par sealed the deal.
Mi Hyun Kim made a nice run at the end with birdies at 16 and 17, but finished two shots back. Lorena Ochoa had the shot of the week with a double-eagle at number 9 which pulled her to within a couple of the lead, but she couldn’t get the back nine going and she finished fifth, three behind. This week’s Big Shout-Out goes to (of course) Laura Davies. Keep an eye on her at the British Open. And poor Stephanie Arricau completed her four-day Evian holiday with a 78 to end up at +28, 44 shots behind Karrie Webb (and five shots out of next-to-last).
