Ginn Tribute – 1st Round

Karrie Webb and In-Kyung Kim are tied for the lead after opening with 65s at the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika. Sophie Gustafson is in third place one shot back with seven players (Mi Hyun Kim, Cristie Kerr and Inbee Park among them) tied for fourth, down by two.

59 players scored under par and less than half the field are over par going into Friday. The damp and calm conditions allowed approaches to be fired directly at the pin with confidence that the ball would stick. The numbers look like this:
67 Giulia Sergas, Heather Young, Allison Fouch, H.J. Choi
68 Song-Hee Kim, Seon Hwa Lee, Jane Park, Teresa Lu
69 Karen Stupples, Yani Tseng, Jeong Jang, Na Yeon Choi
69 Paula Creamer, Juli Inkster, Jimin Kang, Amy Hung
70 Morgan Pressel, Laura Diaz, Jee Young Lee, Ai Miyazato
71 Stacy Prammanasudh, Suzann Pettersen, Leta Lindley
71 Nicole Castrale, Natalie Gulbis, Dina Ammaccapane
72 Annika Sorenstam, Angela Park, Lindsey Wright
72 Louise Friberg, Momoko Ueda, Brittany Lang
73 Christina Kim, Se Ri Pak, Moira Dunn, Sherri Turner
75 Shi Hyun Ahn, Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, Katherine Hull
76 Angela Stanford, Maria Hjorth, Grace Park, Laura Davies
78 Hee-Won Han, Sarah Lee, Ashleigh Simon

Brittany Lincicome did not sign her scorecard and was disqualified. I bet if somebody walked up to her and asked her very nicely in Bulle Rock next week, she would tell us how that went down. Not that I have any right to expect somebody to do that for me. One thing has become very clear to me over the last two days – despite my absolute confidence in this subject matter, I can't make myself walk up and start talking to a player like she's just another person hanging around the golf course. God knows I did a lot of THAT yesterday. The thought that always made me stop short was - anybody I have a genuine interest in or a specific question for, whose life and/or accomplishments warranted my rapt attention in the first place, must be WAY too busy to bother speaking with the likes of me. You’d think after 46 years, I’d probably have some sort of way to compensate for that by now. Hmm…maybe that compensation is what I’m doing right now…

Back to the golf, PLEASE! Tomorrow is expected to be sunny, 82 degrees with wind 10-20mph. Anybody who wants to be sure of making the cut had better finish the day under par. The ground was quite saturated today and since the humidity should off-set the wind’s ability to dry out the greens, the pins will certainly get fired at again.

Depending on how things shake out in the morning (don’t try to visualize that too much), I might be out there again. Wish my battered feet well.

I'm trying to figure out why a professional golfer would not sign her scorecard. It's something she has to do four times a week, every week she plays. At the conclusion of a round, a player takes her card to the scoring tent (or trailer), sits down with her fellow competitors and compares scores. Each player sits in front of an official who then rechecks to scores. The whole process is geared towards getting it right.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think Brittany didn't want to play this week and this was her way of getting out without penalty.

I think the "unsigned scorecard" has become the fashionable way to bail on an event. Not that I'm saying Brittany did that, but this happens much too often to attribute it to random chance.

It is possible that there was a disagreement between her scorecard and the one kept by a playing partner, and Brittany refused to sign for a higher score.

Possibly, but there is probably a resolution procedure for such instances, wouldn't you think?
